Its’ roots, when dried, produce the typical valerian smell, when is as attractive to cats as catnip! The strong smell produced by valerian was utilised by Nordic people in olden times, who would hang valerian above the house door as protection against bad spirits.

    Bring vibrant spikes of blue flowers into your garden with viper’s bugloss.  A member of the Boraginaceae family, it shares the same blue flowers and hairy leaves/stems as borage. The plant got its name “viper” from its spotted stem which resembles snake’s markings and from the shape of the flowers. “Bugloss” comes from the Greek word meaning “ox-tongue”, which describes the plant’s rough, tongue-shaped leaves. The folklore surrounding viper’s bugloss involves themes of protection and courage, with its spikey leaves being able to ward off evil spirits and protect against snake bites, please do not try at home!

Water avens is often referred to as ‘Indian chocolate’ or ‘chocolate root’, due to its roots being brewed to create a chocolate flavour-like drink. This plant is also said to have the power to drive away evil spirits and offer protection from rabid dogs and venomous snakes! What more could you need in the modern age, on an island nation with no rabies and only one mildly poisonous snake?

    The genus &lt;span style=”font-weight: 400;”>Scrophularia<span style=”font-weight: 400;”>, got its name from the the belief that the plants within it could treat scrofula, a form of tuberculosis. Herbalists of the time got this idea from figworts resembling a human throat. This follows the ancient belief of the Doctrine of Signatures, where God or Nature marked plants, minerals and animals with visible “signatures” (shapes, colours or textures) which indicated the human body part or illness that it can cure. Though using water figwort to treat tuberculosis is not done nowadays, the leaves can be used to help calm skin cuts and irritations.

    Despite the name, the Welsh poppy is found across the UK and upland areas of western Europe. In 1743, welsh poppy belonged to the genus Papaver (a genus of the poppy family, Papaveraceae) but was moved to a new genus Meconopis  (which means “poppy-like”) in 1814 due to discrepancies in morphological features. A molecular phylogenetic study conducted in 2011 disproved that the Welsh poppy was separate from the Papaver genus. You will see the name written as either Meconopsis cambrica or Papaver cambricum, depending on where you look!

White clover is a superb forage crop for livestock and has been historically used as folk medicine against intestinal helminthic worms.

It has a pleasant aroma, not as strong as basil found in your kitchen, but nice enough that it was scattered on the floors of homes in medieval times to act as an air freshener. Probably easier ways of making your home smell nice nowadays though.
