The genus <span style=”font-weight: 400;”>Scrophularia<span style=”font-weight: 400;”>, got its name from the the belief that the plants within it could treat scrofula, a form of tuberculosis. Herbalists of the time got this idea from figworts resembling a human throat. This follows the ancient belief of the Doctrine of Signatures, where God or Nature marked plants, minerals and animals with visible “signatures” (shapes, colours or textures) which indicated the human body part or illness that it can cure. Though using water figwort to treat tuberculosis is not done nowadays, the leaves can be used to help calm skin cuts and irritations.
