Birds foot trefoil is a member of the pea family. Its yellow flowers look like little slippers and appear in small clusters. This colourful wildflower is popular with bumblebees, butterflies and many other pollinators. A sun loving plant, this wildflower can often be found in meadows and open grasslands across Scotland.
Like many other peas, a wide range of invertebrate species rely on this species to survive, using the leaves and stems to feed and thrive. Interestingly, this species explosively spreads its seeds as the seed pods dry up, increasing the pressure until they violently pop open, flinging them around the local area.
